Acupuncture, moxibustion, and massage

In some cases, you can receive reimbursements as benefits from the Health Insurance Society for treatment costs you paid in full out of your pocket to a medical care institution or other facility.

If you paid the entire medical care cost up front

If receiving acupuncture or moxibustion together with medical treatment at a hospital for the same condition, only the medical treatment (at a hospital) is eligible for insurance benefits.

Coverage under health insurance is subject to certain conditions.

Treatment is covered by health insurance if both requirements ① and ② below are met.

Requirement ①: The condition is covered by health insurance.
Only the following conditions are covered.

Acupuncture and moxibustion Massage
  • Neuralgia
  • Rheumatism
  • Cervicobrachial syndrome
  • Frozen shoulder syndrome
  • Lower-back pain
  • Aftereffects of cervical sprain
  • * Limited to chronic pain conditions for which there is no effective treatment a doctor can provide and on which a doctor admits therapeutic effects of acupuncture/moxibustion
  • Myoparalysis (e.g., hemiparesis, hemiplegia)
  • Arthrogryposis (e.g., joint function disorder following bone or joint surgery)
  • * Massage is used to treat symptoms, not the underlying conditions.
    Coverage is for muscular paralysis, limited range of motion, and similar conditions.

Requirement ②: Doctor’s consent
You must attach a written consent from a doctor when applying for the first time and when reobtaining consent. (A written consent from a doctor must be attached each month for manual correction of deformities.)

  • * Be sure to be examined by an insurance doctor and obtain a written consent.
  • * A treatment report is issued upon re-obtaining consent. Attach a copy of the treatment report to claim the cost of issuing the report.

●Retroactive consent will not be accepted for either the initial application or re-obtaining consent.

Examples of cases not eligible for payment
Acupuncture and moxibustion Massage
  • Not diagnosed by an insurance doctor with a condition for which there is no effective treatment a doctor can provide, including neuralgia, rheumatism, cervicobrachial syndrome, frozen shoulder syndrome, lower-back pain, or the aftereffects of cervical sprain
  • Acute pain
  • Same illness or injury being treated at an insurance medical care institution (including cases of administration of medications such as plasters)
  • Treatment based on a written consent from an insurance doctor as requested by the individual or treatment clinic
  • Treatment intended for recovery from fatigue, for relaxation, or for disease prevention

The Society provides benefits that reimburses patients for the cost of acupuncture, moxibustion, or massage. The patient must pay the entire amount up front.

Apply to the Society by attaching the required documents to the Application Form for Medical Care Expenses (for acupuncture, moxibustion) or Application Form for Medical Care Expenses (for massage).

Notes on acupuncture, moxibustion, and massage

  • Be sure to check the Application Form for Medical Care Expenses to ensure there are no errors in the description of the cause of injury, injury name (injured parts of the body), number of days, amount, or other aspects, then sign or apply a seal.
  • Obtain a receipt and confirm that the amounts are correct. Contact the Recruit Health Insurance Society if you find any error in amounts, etc.

The Society may inquire to obtain more information

The Society may inquire by post or telephone regarding the details of the treatment and the cause of the injury.
The doctor who consented to treatment may also be contacted.
