Childbirth

“The Childbirth and Childcare Lump-Sum Grant” is paid when an insured person gives birth and “the Dependents' Childbirth and Childcare Lump-Sum Grant” is paid when a dependent family member gives birth. Don't forget to add the newborn as a dependent in these cases.

Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant

When using the system of direct payment

Submit the documents on agreement to use the system to the medical care institution or other facility where you plan to give birth. (You need not take any action with respect to the Health Insurance Society. For more information, check with the medical care institution or other facility where you plan to give birth.)
If the childbirth costs are less than the Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant, you will need to claim the difference in amounts. No action is needed if there is no difference in amounts.

  • Copies of documents on agreement to use the system from the medical care institution or other facility
    (documents demonstrating that you have concluded a proxy agreement with the medical care institution or other facility to use the system of direct payment of Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant to medical institutions and indicating the name of the Health Insurance Society as application recipient)
  • Copies of receipts for and details of childbirth expenses
    (Documents demonstrating that the details are the same as those on the special invoice submitted by the medical care institution or other facility to the Health Insurance Society and, if giving birth at an institution that is a member of the maternity medical care compensation scheme, showing printed or stamped text certifying that the childbirth took place at a member institution)
Deadline: Within two years from the day after the date of birth

Using the system of receipt of the Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant directly by the medical institution on your behalf

If you want to use the system of receipt of the Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant directly by the medical institution on your behalf, first apply to the Health Insurance Society using the form indicated below.

Required documents:
A copy of the maternal and child health handbook (page showing the name of the mother and the expected date of birth) or a document certifying that the expected date of birth is within two months

If you paid the entire amount of childbirth expenses to the medical care institution

Submit the following application to the Health Insurance Society if you have not used the system of direct payment of Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant to medical institutions or the system of receipt of the Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant directly by the medical institutions on your behalf or you have given birth overseas.

  • Copies of agreements from the medical care institution or other facility
    (documents demonstrating that you have not concluded a proxy agreement with the medical care institution or other facility on use of the system of direct payment of Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant to medical institutions and indicating the name of the Health Insurance Society as application recipient)
  • Copies of receipts for and details of childbirth expenses
    (Documents demonstrating that you have concluded a proxy agreement with the medical care institution or other facility to use the system of direct payment of Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant to medical institutions and, if giving birth at an institution that is a member of the maternity medical care compensation scheme, showing printed or stamped text certifying that the childbirth took place at a member institution)
  • A Japanese translation for childbirth overseas

Loans for childbirth expenses

About loans for childbirth expenses

Loans for childbirth expenses are available for use by the following persons planning to give birth at a medical care institution or similar facility that does not offer the system of direct payment.

Eligible persons:

Insured persons and dependents at the time of application and the time of childbirth who plan to give birth at a medical care institution or similar facility that does not offer the system of direct payment or the system of receipt of the Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant directly by the medical institution on your behalf and expect to be paid the Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant, and who meet either of the descriptions under ⑪ and ⑫ below.

⑪ Those planning to give birth within one month
⑫ Those who have been pregnant for at least four months (85 days) and need to make payment to the hospital, birth center, etc. temporarily

Amount of loan: Up to 336,000 at one time
Repayment method: The loans will be offset against the Childbirth and Childcare Lump-sum Grant paid after childbirth. You do not need to repay them.
